When I moved in, my house had peeling black vinyl numbers stuck directly to the white aluminum siding next to the front door. The corners of the numbers were curling up and collecting a thick layer of yellow pollen and dust. It made the entire entryway look like a cheap rental property.
I spent forty-five minutes scraping the vinyl off with a plastic putty knife. It left behind a thick, sticky square of adhesive residue that required a heavy chemical solvent to remove. The siding underneath was noticeably brighter than the rest of the house because it had not been bleached by the sun.
Instead of buying more stickers, I went online and bought heavy, solid brass floating house numbers. They cost about forty dollars for the set.
Installing them was terrifying because you have to drill actual holes straight through your siding to mount the metal pegs. I measured the spacing four times with a level before I even touched the drill. I filled the holes with a little bit of clear exterior silicone before tapping the numbers in with a rubber mallet so water could not get behind the siding.
It is easily the best forty dollars I have spent on the house. The heavy metal instantly makes the front porch look intentional and finished. Do not buy the stickers. Drill the holes. Just make sure you check your level twice before you make them permanent.
